Language and communication disorders in children

For children with language skills difficulties, our specialists will offer you a comprehensive and individualized evaluation, treatment programs, and parent workshops. Our experts will work closely with your family to identify the impact on your child's communication, social participation, and wellbeing.

Aiming at the best therapy outcomes, your child's assessing therapist will recommend the therapy delivery model, which could be one-to-one sessions, group therapy sessions, or parent workshops.

Our goal is to assist your child in reaching their optimal potential with their language and social communication skills.

Expressive language delay/disorder
Receptive language delay/disorder
Mixed language delay/disorder
Communication disorders such as autism spectrum disorder

Speech sounds disorders

Some children struggle to say words correctly, which is usual for most children as they learn to speak. Children who do not say words at their expected ages may have a speech sound disorder.

Our certified speech therapists are qualified to provide differential diagnoses of various speech sounds disorders, including:

Articulation disorders: Errors in the production of individual speech sounds, such as distortions and substitutions.
Phonological disorders: Predictable, rule-based errors that affect more than one sound, such as fronting or final consonant deletion.
Dysarthria: Neurologic motor conditions that affect muscles involved in speech production.
Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A neurological childhood speech sound disorder in which the consistency and precision of movements underlying speech are impaired.
Motor speech disorders: PROMPT therapy.

Cochlear rehabilitation and auditory verbal therapy

Through listening, children learn to speak, read and write. Hearing loss can affect these areas of development. We aim to help our patients who are using hearing technology (hearing aids or cochlear implants) to overcome the challenges caused by hearing loss, therefore improving their listening, speech, language, cognition, and social communication skills.

Our services include:

Comprehensive speech and language evaluation pre and post-cochlear implants for pediatric.
Provide evidence-based rehabilitation programs, including Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) for pediatric patients.
Consultative sessions post cochlear implants for adults.

Fluency disorders

A fluency disorder is when the flow of speech is interrupted, characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies including stuttering, cluttering, and neurogenic stuttering.

Disfluencies may occur as repetition of sounds, syllables, or words, blocks, and prolongation. Fluency disorders can impact an individual’s social life and communication.

Our services include: screening, evaluation, intervention, education, and support to those with fluency disorders of all ages. We provide:

Adult neurogenic communication disorders

Our emphasis is on maximizing the functional communication skills of adults with acquired speech, language, and cognitive-communication disorders resulting from stroke, brain injury, or neurological disease. Our goal is to assist each patient in achieving and maintaining those skills that will enable them to function independently in the home, work, and social environments. We provide services for adult outpatients experiencing communication difficulties associated with aphasia, dementia and dysarthria.

Voice disorders and Cleft Lip/Palate

We offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with all voice and resonance disorders including cleft lip and palate. Working closely with the referring physicians, our Speech Language Pathologists have specialized training and provide the best possible care for each patient.

Our services for pediatric and adult patients include:

Video Stroboscopy
Flexible Video Endoscopic
Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT)
Acoustic and perceptual evaluation of voice characteristics
Treatment of dysphonia and functional voice disorders
Prosthesis and tracheoesophageal puncture voice prosthesis for patients with laryngectomy

Feeding and swallowing disorders

We offer comprehensive assessments and treatments for inpatients and outpatients with feeding or swallowing disorders known as dysphagia.

Our services include:

Comprehensive clinical swallowing evaluation
Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) Study: this exam involves swallowing food under fluoroscopic X-ray
Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES): passing an endoscope trans-nasally to evaluate swallow function
Vital-Stim Therapy

We aim to identify the cause of a swallowing/feeding problem, restore swallow function, and improve nutrition and quality of life. Therapy might include diet modification, rehabilitative exercises, proper feeding positioning, and compensatory maneuvers to help patients swallow more safely and efficiently.

What to expect from Speech Therapy at JHAH

Before treatment

Once you receive a speech-language pathology referral from your physician, please arrange an evaluation appointment by calling 013 870 6094.

A parent or caregiver should attend the initial evaluation meeting at the Speech Language Pathology (SLP) clinic.

During treatment

You will work closely with your speech therapist in achieving your or your child's therapy goals as identified in the initial evaluation appointment. Your speech therapist will establish an individualized care plan as needed. Therapy may include both direct and indirect approaches. You will also receive feedback throughout the therapy program and home program exercises to enhance your or your child's therapy progress and outcomes.

Post-treatment

After completing the therapy program, you will be re-evaluated to monitor your progress and identify a plan moving forward. Your speech therapist may refer you to any other professional and share speech therapy resources per the provided care plan.

The speech therapist is a great asset to JHAH. Within a few minutes of therapy she had gained a huge amount of insight into my son’s needs.
