Plastic Surgery

What is plastic surgery?

Our surgeons are here to help improve the function or appearance of your body through reconstructive plastic surgery. Whether surgical repair or restoration is needed because of injury, loss, disease, defects or appearance, our team provides comprehensive care to help improve your quality of life.

Plastic surgery procedures

The goal of breast reconstruction is to restore one or both breasts to near normal shape, appearance, symmetry and size following mastectomy, lumpectomy or congenital deformities.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common birth anomalies affecting children worldwide. The incomplete formation of the upper lip (cleft lip) or roof of the mouth (cleft palate) can occur individually, or both defects may occur together. The conditions can vary in severity and may involve one or both sides of the mouth. Surgery is required to repair cleft lip and/or cleft palate.

If you suffer from painful conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis or Dupuytren's contracture, you may find that hand surgery will help alleviate the pain.

Losing a lot of weight in a short space of time can lead to unsightly or irritating excess skin. Our experts can treat this with surgeries including arm lifts, breast lifts, abdominoplasty, belt lipectomy or thigh lifts. These procedures can be tailored to your needs, to create a better functional and aesthetic look.

While moles (congenital nevi) are very common, and found on one in every 100 people, large moles (giant nevi) are not as common, and can be considered unsightly or add to the risk of melanoma. Our surgeons can give you advice about the removal of moles whatever their size, and wherever they occur on the body.

If you or a family member have suffered from a trauma or burn, we can help aid your recovery and improve your quality of life.

What to expect from plastic surgery

When arranging an appointment, we will make sure that you see one of our experienced plastic surgeons. If you decide to have your procedure with us, our experienced care team will look after you every step of the way – from giving advice at your first consultation, through to offering ongoing support after your surgery.

You will receive confirmation of your clinic appointment by SMS and/or email. If you need to cancel or reschedule, use MyChart or call 800-305-4444 at least 24 hours before your appointment.

Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and go directly to the reception area to check in/register. Within five minutes, a member of our nursing staff will carry out a physical assessment and check your medical history with you. You will then have a wait of around 20 to 30 minutes before meeting your surgeon.

Your meeting with the surgeon will last about 20 minutes, and will give us a chance to talk through with you how things will progress, and set out a treatment plan. We may be able to provide a diagnosis at this first visit, but often additional testing may be needed before this is possible. Often, this can be done on the same day, but sometimes you might need to make a separate appointment or special preparation. Before you leave, the team will give you detailed instructions about what will happen next. If you need surgery, your surgeon will arrange it.

You will be invited to a preadmission clinic, usually a few weeks before the surgery, to ensure that you are well enough for the anesthetic and to talk through what will happen during the operation. This appointment will last around an hour. Feel free to ask any questions. A preanesthesia clinic visit is usually scheduled for the same day, and will last about 20 minutes.

You will receive a call from the operating room access team 24 hours before your surgery to confirm. If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible, as other patients may be able to use your slot.

You should fast for eight hours prior to checking in for surgery, and drink only clear liquids (such as water, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated drinks, and tea without milk). Stop drinking two hours before surgery. Your doctor will have discussed with you whether you need to stop taking any medication before surgery, and you should bring all medication with you. Make sure you shower and wear clean, comfortable clothes before coming to the operation. Don’t bring any valuables. If you are a same-day admission patient, you will be transferred to the inpatient ward.

Following your care, and depending on your specific treatment, you will have follow-up appointments. If you need to go through recovery sessions, we will arrange visits with our teams, who specialize in plastic surgery recovery and will recommend rehabilitation exercises.
