We focus on four types of general surgery at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) – bariatric (obesity), colorectal, oncology and pediatric – providing excellence and years of experience within these medical specialties.
If you or a family member require surgery, you can be assured that our skilled teams are highly professional, whether surgery is elective, emergency or trauma related. In all cases, we take great care to be as minimally invasive as possible.
During a clinical assessment, your surgeon may decide that surgery is the best course of action for your condition. If this is the case – and if your condition is not an emergency – you will be referred to the Preadmission and Anesthesia Clearance Clinic. Prior to your procedure, you may receive a consultation from one of our anesthetists, who will talk you through the anesthesia process and make sure that you are fit for anesthesia.
Once cleared for surgery, you will be given verbal and written instructions to follow in readiness for your surgery. On the day of your procedure, you should arrive at the designated day surgery center, where you will be prepared for the operating room.
You will receive a call from the pre-operation nursing team 24 hours before your surgery, to assess your health and confirm that you are coming for your scheduled surgery. If you need to cancel surgery, please inform the team as soon as possible, to give others a chance to receive treatment in your slot.
You will be informed of your check-in time and should ensure you follow the fasting instructions provided, to avoid last minute cancellation of surgery. In general, you should not consume solid food for eight hours before surgery. However, clear liquid such as water is allowed up to two hours before surgery. Your dedicated team will tell you if medication needs to be stopped, and you should bring all medication with you.
Depending on the type of surgery you have received, you will either be discharged on the same day (once it is safe to do so) or you will be required to remain in hospital while you recover.
