So when, in 2013, we joined forces to create a brand-new health service for Saudi Aramco employees and their dependents – expanding on the capabilities of the company’s long-established medical facilities – we knew an exciting future was in store.
As well as offering a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services at our various clinics, we are dedicated to overcoming the health challenges faced by the communities we serve, organizing regular outreach events to encourage more beneficial lifestyle choices.

Back in 1936, a single doctor was employed to provide medical support for early drilling operations in Dhahran. Fast forward 77 years to 2013, and Johns Hopkins Medicine joined forces with Saudi Aramco at the same site, providing a world-class healthcare system to the local community. T.C. Alexander, M.D. is employed by the California-Arabian Standard Oil Company (CASOC) to provide medical support for early drilling operations in Dhahran.
CASOC changes its name to Aramco (the Arabian-American Oil Company).
Aramco opens a major refinery at Ras Tanura, along with a clinic to cater for employees’ medical needs.
Aramco operates a hospital, clinics and a pharmacy across its drilling sites in the eastern province.
Aramco partners with the Saudi government to establish a malaria-control program.
Aramco opens the new 263-bed Dhahran Health Center, along with smaller, 32-bed hospitals in Abqaiq and Ras Tanura. They are the first facilities in the Kingdom to be recognized by the U.S.-based Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.
Aramco’s medical department hires its first female Saudi, as a health educator.
The newly named ‘Saudi Aramco’ places the first Saudi students in top U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Tulane and the University of Alabama.
Saudi Aramco’s medical laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for the first time.
Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) is launched. It is the only health system outside of the U.S. to feature the Johns Hopkins name.
JHAH conducts its first Patient Satisfaction Survey. The new, monthly initiative provides a way to understand and deliver the best care.
JHAH’s urology department launches a robotic surgery program – the first facility in the Kingdom to use the latest da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.
JHAH opens a new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) facility in Al-Hasa.
Two advanced robotic medication dispensing systems are installed in the pharmacy at JHAH Dhahran – the first to be introduced in the Gulf region.
A new, revamped EMS facility opens at JHAH ‘Udhailiyah, housing twice as many beds as previously.
JHAH launches its Residency Training Program.
‘Suite Six’ opens at the Dhahran Primary Care Clinic. Built on a swing design, it enhances both visitor comfort and operational efficiency.
The first bone marrow transplant is performed at JHAH. JHAH offers cornea surgery for the first time.
JHAH launches its Tawazon Diabetic Prevention Program at the Abqaiq Health Center – the first of its kind in the Kingdom.
JHAH officially opens the Al-Hasa Health Center.
The first 13 nurses graduate from JHAH’s new Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.
JHAH welcomes the first 14 participants to its four-year Family Medicine Residency Program.
JHAH launches the electronic health record system, Epic, including its online patient portal, MyChart.
JHAH launches its Cardiac Surgery Program, introduces a Nurse Care Line service, and opens a new, state-of-the-art hemodialysis treatment area at Dhahran.
The Board of Managers is responsible for oversight and guidance of Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare, its long-term strategic direction and the sustainable achievement of the joint venture’s objectives.
The Board of Managers’ membership strongly reflects the two renowned parent organizations: Saudi Aramco and Johns Hopkins Medicine. In addition to the presence of Saudi Aramco and Johns Hopkins Medicine’s senior corporate executives and medical leaders, the Board includes experienced business people.
