What is mental health?

At Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) our mental health team follows a holistic approach to your treatment that promotes health and wellbeing through the collaboration of teams of experts from a variety of medical disciplines.

Mental health services

At our two 10-bed inpatient psychiatric units, we promote wellbeing in a calm and contained environment, with 24-hour inpatient services. Our amenities include a communal dining room, a lounge, an outdoor patio and a gymnasium. Your team consists of the attending psychiatrist, the unit psychiatrist, a social worker and a dietician.

At our Clinical Psychology Unit, we promote mental health, and provide a safe and confidential environment for individuals, groups and families of all ages. We provide psychotherapy and diagnostic assessments, mental health and neuropsychological assessments and evaluations, including memory, epilepsy, pre-surgical and parent-child interaction.

Our aim is to help you develop healthy, fulfilling relationships and increase your enjoyment in productive working and learning. You will work with counselors to resolve a problem, change behavior or foster personal growth and awareness. Counseling sessions are available for individuals, groups, families and couples. Services include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and emotional freedom techniques (EFT), for a variety of disorders.

We are here to help diagnose and treat people of all ages, working with other mental health specialists to assess and intervene where appropriate. Services include: day treatment programs, medication management, a long-acting injecting clinic and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

We are here to help you and your family cope and adjust to illness, in order to enhance your quality of life. Services include: education and teaching, supportive counseling, financial evaluation, discharge planning, home visits, a call-in system for crisis interventions, and outreach programs. We have inpatient and outpatient units, as well as emergency medical services (EMS), at Dhahran; and outpatient clinics and EMS at Abqaiq, Ras Tanura and Al-Hasa (a call-in system and 24/7 crisis interventions).

What to expect from our mental health services

Your first visit

It is important that you check with your Primary Care physician to see if you need to obtain a referral for a specialist visit or diagnostic testing before you visit our clinics. Before your appointment, you will receive an SMS text message with an arrival time. If you are not able to keep your appointment, please call at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule or cancel. Be sure to arrive for your appointment 15 minutes before the stated arrival time.

Please bring with you a list of all the medications you are taking.

Clinical psychology evaluations

Depending on the reason for your referral and your individual needs, the clinical psychologist will develop a range of tests to ensure a comprehensive assessment. Typically, a full evaluation can take from six to eight hours, and is often completed over a period of two to three visits. The results will give us a broad view of your psychological functioning, including intellectual and academic strengths and weaknesses, personality patterns, and various psychological diagnoses.  A report may take up to six weeks to complete from the time of your feedback session.

Evaluations may be a little frightening for some children. To make them as relaxed as possible, talk to them in advance about what they can expect, and perhaps bring a small snack and warm clothing to make them feel comfortable.

Please consult with your psychiatrist to find out more about our inpatient services.
